The focus of this project was to conserve a Spangletop dominated wetland while managing the stormwater from an industrial development in Calgary. A critical aspect of managing the stormwater is the low discharge rate allowed from the site into Nose Creek. These limitations created the need for low impact development (LID) features to be used on the site in conjunction with a stormwater wetland facility.
Source 2 Source Inc. (S2S), as subconsultants to IDEA Group, developed an environmentally sound design that treated the stormwater before allowing it to enter the conserved Spangletop wetland using a series of bioretention swales, forebays and wetland treatment cells. The bioretention swales collect, treat and convey the stormwater from the roads and each development site at Jacksonport. The 2 km of bioswales primarily absorb the stormwater, but also convey it to the wetland facility in extreme runoff events.
