Northeast Stoney Trail Stormwater System, Calgary

The Northeast Stoney Trail Stormwater System is an environmental design project for Calgary’s Northeast bypass freeway.  Our company provided environmental design services for 10 ponds and over 80 wetlands and infiltration areas.  Regional limitations for acceptable runoff volumes required that a Low Impact Development (LID) approach be used for the overall freeway project.  The soils of the area are of uniformly low permeability, which required extensive application of shallow infiltration and evapotranspiration techniques.  The project also involves preservation of numerous existing wetlands and the creation of habitats to compensate for losses related to the project in keeping with Alberta and Calgary wetland conservation policy.  Construction was completed in 2009.
